Creating an Ergonomic Desk / Workspace
Find your Natural Posture – before you start to organize your workspace, you need to understand your natural posture. Once you understand that, you need to design a work environment around it. It is like the driving position in your car:
Scoot all the way to the backrest
Feet flat on ground
Thighs parallel to ground
Mouse and Keyboard Placement are Important – To avoid strain, your elbows should be at your sides, and bent at a 90 degree (or less) angle.
Your keyboard height should be 1-3 inches above your thighs.
Keyboards should not be tilted toward you. They should be tilted away slightly. This is more easily achieved with a keyboard tray.
Positioning of your keyboard and mouse should be no wider than the width of your shoulders. This can be more easily achieved with a keyboard that does not have a number pad.
Screen Positioning – With your shoulders back in your chair, the screen should be roughly the distance of your extended arms and fingertips. Your eyes should be at the level of the address bar. The monitor should be tilted slightly downward to eliminate glare.
Chair Adjustments – You need a chair with good lumbar support. When you sit with your tailbone all the way back, there should be a few inches between the end of the chair and the back of your knees. Your feet should be flat on the floor, and your thighs should be slightly angled downward.
